This and That

November 8, 2011
There are a couple of things we need to discuss today. First and foremost, I am happily restoring my backed up files to my new Mac. It’s long overdue, but it’s finally happening. Turns out I was just so up in arms over having to use a *gasp* Dell, that I frankly didn’t care that I was missing any files and just opted to use my new Mac bare bones. Thank god for Time Machine. It’s working diligently as I blog.
One snake taken care of today.
Second topic is this weather. It has been phenomenal. Granted, Boo and I have been essentially stuck inside for almost three weeks so it’s been tough to enjoy it, but we have basked in the sun as it has gracefully spilled across the playroom floor.
Today was the first day Boo was feeling well enough to be kept sufficiently busy. It was a very welcomed change for both of us. We first went to Target to get about a week’s worth of errands in, then hit up Whole Foods to replenish the refrigerator and pantry, and we finished off the morning with a trip to the playground with some friends from playgroup. The sunshine, the crunchy leaves, the breeze and good friends completed the morning of fun. It was a good day for both of us.
Third, and most important, topic is a 5 mile race this weekend. A friend of mine and I have been training for this race for a couple of months. And I use the term training very loosely in this context. We were both kicking major ass in our morning runs, reporting back to one another via email about distance, time, and general perception of how we felt during our runs. And then the illnesses began. First it started with me with the flu. Then it hit her children with colds. And then it hit my Boo with croup. And lastly, it has gotten her and subsequently her husband. So while we were both up around six miles per run at a reasonable pace, we have both been shot back down to square run.
And by run, I meant one. Freudian slip.
I’ve been holding steady at 3 miles for the last several days. She has gotten herself back up to 4. I was supposed to run this morning but we were all up again last night with Boo’s cough. Thankfully the croup has subsided and now he seems to have the same post-nasal drip induced cough that I had after the flu. And it is an annoyingly, ticklish cough. Poor little man. I know just what he’s going through. Unfortunately for my husband, it means long days. And unfortunately for me, it means long days and little to no strength or motivation to train.
I just hope we get some sleep soon.
And you know, while we’re on the topic of sleep, what exactly is the point of Daylight Saving Time? I mean, in theory it makes sense. Add some hours to the summer sun. Fine. But what are we supposed to do when Daylight Saving is over and we have to switch our clocks back? Not only does that screw up entire schedules and sleep patterns for parents and children, it makes the afternoons of winter long, lonely and boring.
Thankfully today is a beautiful, sunny, unseasonably warm day. We’ll enjoy it while we’ve got it. So what if it gets dark at 3:00 pm?
That’s all for now. Thanks for listening. I’m glad I got all of that off my chest.
Happy trails!
