The First Snow

November 6, 2010
Welcome, winter! This morning we woke up to a very light dusting of snow outside our windows.
The first snowfall of the season.
I am well aware that yesterday I was just complaining about how much I hate winter and the dark, dreary days of the upcoming season. But with this morning’s snowfall, and the day’s continued accumulation of the white stuff, it has made me think of the things I love about snowy and cold winters.
I love the first snowfall and everything it has come to symbolize. With it comes holidays, warm fires, fattening comfort foods, 4WD, snuggling in fleece and flannel pajamas, and warm bathrobes. We get to play outside and make snow angels, take the kids and dogs sledding and bounding through heaps and piles of white fluffy fun. Some of us go snowboarding or skiing. Some of us would like to learn how to snowboard or ski. And some of us just like to sit inside and watch the light, airy flakes fall from the sky.
I love the smell of gas heat, piping hot, come up through the vents and the immediate warmth on my toes. I love when the cats come and curl up on my lap while my husband and I catch up on our TV watching in the evening. I love Thanksgiving turkey and stuffing, I love lighting the Chanukah candles. I love the twinkling of the lights on our Christmas tree. I love that I am allowed to sing Christmas carols and Chanukah songs and not be ridiculed by my husband that “it’s July! You can’t sing Christmas songs in the summer!”
So I guess winter isn’t all bad. I’m actually quite fond of it. I suppose the time of year I really loathe is post-holiday season, when the snow is grayish, blackish, brownish, the festive spirit has vacated and spring is still a very distant four months away.

For now I’m going to do my best to soak up all of the happy, festive, fun-filled goodness of the first snow. Welcome, winter!

“Later on, we’ll conspire, as we dream by the fire.
To face unafraid, the plans that we made
Walking in a Winter Wonderland…”
