The Golden Rule

April 28, 2010
Have you heard the old adage “if you have nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all?” Or perhaps “do unto others as you would have them do unto you?” I think it’s time we bring those back into our social venacular. It seems society in general needs a face-lift. And by society, I mean family.
I don’t understand why people talk negatively about one another. Especially family. If it’s the one entity that you should be able to openly communicate with, it should be your family. So why is it that more often than not, families are at odds with each other?
Take this for example: in my friend’s family, his brothers are fighting over money. They started a business together and now they don’t agree on anything. One brother is holding steadfast to the business and the other brother is trying to start a new venture. It’s really an awful situation and likely going to get worse before it gets better.
And then there’s this: my other friend’s family is at odds over a divorce that happened many years ago. Her cousin’s parents got divorced. Her uncle went to live with his mother (her grandmother) during the divorce and now her cousin is mad at their grandmother and aunt because they supported him during a divorce from her mom. So now my friend’s brother is getting married and didn’t invite her cousin or her family to the wedding. All because of a divorce. And likely money. If they had been married for over 10 years, there’s a chance that financial issues don’t have to remain that way. There is such a thing as ‘divorce and Social Security benefits‘ that they can look at, but right now things are sounding tense, so best give it time to stop bubbling and then jump in with that nugget of information.
If love makes the world go round, money and divorce bring the world to a sudden and abrupt halt, crashing us back to reality. The comedown can be even greater if you don’t have the support of an experienced legal team like Wolfe and Stec to help guide you through this very difficult time. Divorce can negatively impact multiple people’s lives, not just the two people who are actually getting a divorce. It’s been known to cause big family issues, just like my friend’s family situation. However, perhaps they should’ve considered using Stearns Law firm or another legal firm like this. They might’ve helped to end the marriage in a better way.
All that being said, getting a divorce nowadays is much easier than it used to be. A lot of the stigma behind divorces seems to have dissipated. Plus, if a couple has already completed a prenuptial agreement prior to getting married, the division of assets is often a straightforward process. For example, some old colleagues of mine recently got divorced, but thanks to the Los Angeles prenup attorneys that they hired, the entire process of their split was taken care of quickly and efficiently. Anyway, hopefully both of these families will be able to work their issues out and come out better and stronger in the end. And maybe we can take a lesson from these situations and return to a simpler time when people, starting with the family and extending to society, lived ardently by the Golden Rule. We’ll all be much better for it.
“You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against your kinsfolk.
Love your neighbor as yourself: I am the LORD. “

~Leviticus 19:18[38], the “Great Commandment”
